Gout Foods – The Good and the Bad

When you have gout, it is a very painful and debilitating condition. It affects mainly the joints and can make it hard to move without pain. Luckily this condition can be controlled almost completely with gout foods. There are good gout foods and bad ones. Foods you should eat, and others you should avoid. We are going to take a look at some of the foods that will help your gout, and others that will make it worse.

Good foods to eat when you have gout are things that are low in purines (which directly affects the uric acid in your body) and high in potassium, vitamin C, and other nutrients that are known to reduce inflammation and uric acid in your body. Most vegetables, and non citrus fruits are great for this purpose. Bananas have a high amount of potassium, which works to reduce inflammation and pain. Cherries have been known to be a great food for gout, because they not only reduce the pain and swelling, but they also help to flush uric acid from your body.

There are many foods that you should avoid if you have gout. Foods that are high in purines, like most meats are, should be avoided. Specifically, organ meats should not be ingested if you have gout. This includes the kidney, brains, or liver of the animal. They are very high in purines and will increase the uric acid levels in your body, which will increase the crystals that form in the joints. Avoiding red meats completely will ensure that the gout does not get worse, and you can begin to flush out uric acid from the body and get rid of the gout altogether.

Gout is a hard disease to live with but with the right foods and diet, you can overcome it.
